Why is the claim amount higher than the value of the vehicle?

This situation can occur when a waiver of depreciation endorsement (such as OPCF 43 or 43R) is attached to the insurance policy. When applied, this endorsement results in a total loss claim, meaning the insurance company will either replace the vehicle with a newer model or reimburse the MSRP value of the vehicle. Coverage is provided for a specific period as determined by the insurance company.

  • Why does the estimate show “total loss,” but the vehicle was neither branded as “salvage” or “rebuilt”?

Before purchasing a used car, we recommend obtaining a CARFAX Canada Vehicle History Report, taking the vehicle for a thorough test drive, and having it inspected by a qualified mechanic or auto technician to ensure it’s in good working condition.

Additionally, we suggest contacting your provincial vehicle registration authority to confirm that the vehicle can be registered and operated in your province.
