Possible total loss-vehicle, title/registered to an insurance company

It is possible for a vehicle to be indicated as a “Total Loss” without being branded. If the vehicle meets a certain threshold (set by the insurance company), the “Total Loss” trigger is activated.

If your report shows “possible total loss,” check the “Canadian Registration Section” to verify if the vehicle has been branded.

If the record includes “title/registered to an insurance company,” this means the insurance company deemed the vehicle a total loss and took ownership of it.

For more information, please refer to:

  • Total Loss
  • Why is the claim amount higher than the vehicle’s value?
  • Why does the estimate show “total loss,” but the vehicle isn’t branded as “salvage” or “rebuilt?”

Before purchasing a used car, we recommend obtaining a CARFAXINSPECTION  USA + Canada Vehicle History Report, taking the vehicle for a thorough test drive, and having it inspected by a qualified mechanic or auto technician to ensure it’s in good working condition. Additionally, it’s a good idea to check with your provincial vehicle registration authority to confirm that the vehicle can be registered and operated in your province.
